Cassandra displays a random (hopefully interesting) quote or phrase. It does this small job as unobtrusively and elegantly as possible. If you like what it says, just drag it from the window. If nothing else, it should be a good introduction to computer nerd humor…
Cassandra is Hello!-ware. If you like it, send me a hello. I like strange postcards; I collect souvenir and logo mugs and cups; I read my e-mail.
How?
Place any Unix or Bongo Bob format files within the “Fortunes” folder in the Preferences Folder. Put Cassandra in your Startup Items folder. It quite when you close its window. If you like a particular fortune, drag and drop it anywhere you want.
Why?
There are other programs that do this. At least three for Macintosh that I know of. Cassandra uses less memory and doesn’t get in your way any more than it has to. No sounds, no dialog boxes, now extra time, just a small window in the corner of your screen.
Cassandra is a Faceless Background Application. As such, it does not appear in the applications menu. Don’t freak out, everything is working right. Also, there is a bug in the Finder that dims out the icon after Cassandra has quit. Again, don’t freak out.
What Else?
Cassandra is based on Matt Slot’s Appe Windows code. It uses the Infinity Windoid. It requires at least System 7.1. More fortunes can be found, but it is a little bit difficult. Search for “fortune” on the internet and you might find some, or get Bongo Bob files off the mac archives. Also, don’t sue me if Cassandra behaves badly. She is, after all, a whiny goddess…
